his woman Or that is the conceit Laurey Bright is working with in this story, published in 1982 In 1982 I was 19 turning 20 and would have eaten this with a spoon and demandedNow, thirty plus years later, I can cringe at the domestic violence I can be relieved that the H h broke up when she was 19 and he was 29 And I can only wish these two crazy kids the best five years later when they meet again and this time embark on a relationship withequal footing So what is this about The story opens five years after they last parted and then we re plunged into a flashback I ll just start with the flashback H h meet when the 18 year old heroine applies for a job in the typing pool at the hero s financial planning firm She is very beautiful according to the hero and smart with a smart mouth She s a foster kid and she s eager to work and make something of herself Hero never shows his feelings, but every now and again cracks a smile or a gleam of amusement shows in his eyes Heroine lives for these moments Eventually the hero s PA needs time off so the heroine gets the job She is able to read the hero and everyone in the office looks to her to know the big boss s mood before entering his office When hero gets wind of it, he s angry because he doesn t like that the heroine can read him and passing on that info. After working together six months or so, the H h begin dating They really do date They go places The hero introduces her to art, she presses books on him to read The hero really wants to have sex with her, so he asks her to marry him with no declaration of I Love You Heroine agrees They meet his mother who is a kissing cousin to Cruella Devile, complete with fur stole and cigarette holder Hero has mommy issues, but the author shows them and there are no pages of inner monologue to wade through Heroine introduces the hero to her roommate who doesn t like him They attempt a double date and the hero is jealous of heroine dancing with the other guy That night there are one too many punishing kisses for the virgin heroine She is afraid of this kind of lovemaking and decides she needs to break it off view spoiler Heroine is late coming home for a weekend away with her roommate in the country She doesn t let the hero know where she s been and he s worried He turns up at her apartment in the morning only to find a strange man there It s the heroine s foster brother whom she happened to meet on the bus coming back to the city OM is due to start a new job and didn t know where he was going to stay for the night Hero thinks the heroine was lying to him all along about being a virgin and took this guy to bed Heroine won t answer his questions and breaks it off, letting him think she cheated on him hide spoiler Fast forward five years Heroine is living in another city in NZ and hero is planning on moving there Heroine works for a temp firm and hero requests her This time he s going to have his sweet vengeance and he s not going to offer marriage Heroine has had time to regret what she did to the hero, but she s not going to let him win this battle She is still a virgin, still cares for him, but now she is no longer afraid of passion They date again They go places and have good times together The heroine meets his friends and learnsabout his horrible mother and how she would belittle him and how he had to learn to not care what she said Hence the poker face and being threatened if anyone could read him He s still trying to please his mommy and he pays all of her bills, etc Even though she treats him like crap With this new insight the heroine realizes how she can get sweet vengeance on the hero and eventually win back his good regard It almost backfires on her though view spoiler When she tells him how she has been manipulating him, he loses it and she thinks he s going to hit her Instead he hits the wall behind her Her scream and the hole in the wall bring the neighbors running The heroine lies and says she saw a spider and the hero was killing it for her The hero then blurts out how much he loves her and would never hit her, he just lost control Heroine melts because if he lost control he must really love her, etcThis is every domestic violence scene ever and it s a sick dynamic and the cycle of anger and violence and regret will be repeated over and over again until one of them is dead In the story it s the fire the burns through the lies and illuminates the truth but in real life this is one big warning sign deep breath The hero now believes the heroine that she is still a virgin and they wait for their wedding night to consummate the marriage Heroine thinks she will continue to teach the hero to trust and to love HEA hide spoiler This is one intense story and I couldn t put it down The hero with the hidden, dangerous depths is catnip to the heroine and to the reader But the violence is romanticized and in hindsight I can t buy their HEA lasting very long Hero is always going to be troubled and heroine is always going to be too good for him Yes, they get along well but there will never be ease or peace with someone this volatile and self contained But a good story isn t about peace It s about passion and excitement, highs and lows Sweet Vengeance has these attributes But as a primer on relationships just no.Note I have a print copy of this and I would love to share Does anyone know how to send a book to Open Library to be scanned Otherwise, I ll send it to whomever wants to read it Preeti has first dibs if she till wants to read it after my review
